Let us not forget that from 1981 to 1983, Poland was under martial law, subjected to a Soviet regime. It was essential for French intellectuals to support their counterparts and above all to remain in contact with them, showing "solidarity." This is not the place to recount what I was able to do as President of the University of Paris III for the benefit of our Polish friends, starting in 1981. Here is what I wrote in the journal Europe in April 1983, pp. 212-213:

Maintaining contact, nurturing our relationships, allowing our partners to make their research known throughout Europe—such was my program. Hence my participation in this colloquium at the University of Wroclaw, and the resulting publication:
