MÉLUSINE

INVENTORY OF THESES ON SURREALISM AND SURREALISTS DEFENDED AND IN PREPARATION (1995-2002)

This update of the list of theses defended and in preparation between 1995 and 2002 was compiled from the Internet site of the Central Thesis File of the University of Nanterre. Since the Central Thesis File is undergoing complete restructuring, we were unable to collaborate with its documentalists, as we have done in past years. This inventory may therefore contain certain errors, independent of our will. Nevertheless, it provides an overview of ongoing surrealist research.

The theses were selected based on the keyword "surreal*", as well as by the names of surrealist artists (writers or visual artists) or those close to the movement.

Concerning theses from the period 1970-1985, one can refer to the inventory by Henri Béhar and Christine Pouget in Mélusine I (period 1970-1978), then to the updates presented by Michel Carassou, in Mélusine II (period 1978-1979), Mélusine III (period 1979-1980), Mélusine V (period 1980-1982), Mélusine VII (period 1983-1985). Finally, Mélusine XVI presents the inventory of theses compiled by Véronique Duchemin for the period 1985-1996 1.

We have also introduced certain theses registered and defended in 1995, which were not mentioned in the previous update.

This update includes 362 theses, 325 registered and only 37 defended for the period 1995-2002. We have proceeded with a partition Surrealists/Surroundings 2/Themes. Concerning defended theses, no theme has been listed.

The most studied authors for this period are 3: Aragon 33, Bataille 27, Artaud 22, Char and Gracq 19, Michaux 16, Bonnefoy 15, Queneau and Breton 14 and finally, Leiris 13.

Seven theses are devoted to Césaire, Éluard, and Paz; six theses to Caillois, Duchamp, Mandiargues, and Picasso; four theses to Giacometti, Jacob, Roussel, and Tzara; three theses to Arp, Buñuel, Drieu de la Rochelle, Dubuffet, Klee, Miller and Soupault; and two theses to Azorin, Brauner, Crevel, Dali, Fargue, Hantaï, Klossowski and Reverdy.

Only one thesis is devoted to the following authors: Albert-Birot, Alechinsky, Arrabal, Bellmer, Bousquet, Cahun, Daumal, Delteil, Desnos, Duprey, Fondane, Goll, Hayter, Hinojosa, Henein, Labisse, Laloy, Lam, Laude, Naville, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Rolland de Renéville, Schéhadé, Vitrac.

We have chosen to include all theses devoted to authors appearing in this inventory. Some therefore do not necessarily directly concern surrealism. The reader will select for themselves the theses that interest them. This inventory will nevertheless allow researchers as well as teachers to know which paths have already been taken, and thus more easily orient their research.

INVENTORY OF THESES ON SURREALISM AND SURREALISTS DEFENDED OR IN PREPARATION (1995-2002)

Each entry is structured as follows:

THESIS SUBJECT (AUTHOR OR THEMES)

Thesis author (Surname First name), Thesis Title (titles of artists' works are indicated in normal characters), Research director, type of doctorate (the new regime doctorate will be symbolized by the letter D.), specialty (U. F. R), University, date of defense (the month is in parentheses) or date of registration (if the thesis is in preparation).

When a thesis is devoted to several artists, its entry will be found under the name of the artist appearing first in the inventory. A reference will be mentioned under the names of artists who will appear later in alphabetical order.
