"ANDRÉ BRETON LIFTS ARCANE 17", IN THE SURREALIST FACTORY, PROCEEDINGS OF THE SEMINAR OF THE SURREALISM RESEARCH CENTER, PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE STUDY OF SURREALISM, 2009, P. 7–28.
I explained, in entry 209 of Passage en revues, how the project of publishing the manuscript of Arcane 17 came about. As soon as it seemed feasible, I began studying the document using the methods established in the nineteenth century by the Lansonian school, which I learned during my studies at the University of Grenoble, where I was an assistant to Jean Mallion Jean Mallion (1903-1986) (bnf.fr), the editor of George Sand's works. I tested the validity of these methods before our research group, in a widely attended lecture. The tools at my disposal had certainly improved since the days when, in the attic of the Palais on Place de Verdun, I projected images on glass slides while the professor spoke! Therefore, in the absence of the PowerPoint designed for the occasion, I am providing below the photographs used.
