ALFRED JARRY AND FRENCH THEATER, 1894

PASSAGE EN REVUES

"ALFRED JARRY AND FRENCH THEATER AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY", 1894: EUROPEAN THEATRE IN TURMOIL, MEANING AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE THEATRE A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. EDITED BY HUB HERMANS, WESSEL KRUL, HANS VAN MAANEN. AMSTERDAM, ATLANTA, RODOPI, 1996, PP. 41-53.

Created in 1896, Ubu roi has now become a classic work, which never leaves the contemporary stage, in France and around the world. It was appropriate to make a dramaturgical analysis to explain the reasons for its success. But, while trying to get rid of Father Ubu, this big fellow who stuck to his skin, Jarry felt the need to insert him into several cycles, like the heroes of our chansons de gestes. Complementarily, he devoted himself to writing numerous puppet plays, what he called "mirlitonesque theater". In such a way that, massive like Ubu or light like a puppet defying the laws of gravity, theatricality has invaded all his creation, under the sign of Pataphysics. The dramaturgical principles thus revealed have influenced all "New Theater", from Arrabal to Weingarten, passing through Ionesco and Beckett. In this work, revised and updated, which was authoritative from its first publication in 1980, Henri Béhar rehabilitates dramaturgical study and probes the mysteries of theatricality. He provides an analytical grid applicable to any contemporary dramatic creation.
