"Ubu at the TNP", Revue d'histoire du théâtre, 1977, n° 1, pp. 79-94.
This article is particularly dear to me for the excellent reason that I was the first to open the archives of the Théâtre National Populaire, bequeathed to the National Archives by Jean Vilar himself. I therefore had in my hands all the notes, circulars, handwritten observations concerning the creation of this Ubu. I was then spending the academic year in Abidjan, and I was very sensitive to the immediate acceptance of my text by Rose-Marie Moudouès, who was then directing the Revue d'Histoire du Théâtre, and published it without delay. I must also say that I had been able to see this Ubu during its creation in Paris, when I was in my final year at the Lycée Charlemagne, and that I attended all the shows offered by the TNP every Saturday. And, of course, I have kept a very precise memory of it. Despite all the biases and flaws of the director, this performance of March 1958 was certainly at the origin of my dramaturgical work.
