As its title indicates, this article was intended to open the first volume of the Mélusine journal, indicating the work assigned to the Surrealism Research Center, and welcoming collaborations from the most qualified researchers in this field, in all countries. For me, from the beginning, it was a matter of publishing a substantial volume each year, reflecting the activities of this center. After various failures, both with institutions and publishers, I see myself again one Sunday morning, at the Café de la mairie, Place St Sulpice, in Paris, having coffee with Vladimir Dimitrijevic, the founder of L'Age d'Homme editions in Lausanne, who had arranged to meet me there. According to Eastern custom, he had an espresso on his table, accompanied by a large glass of water. This is where he received his authors, not yet having a Parisian bookstore. Quickly reviewing my file, he had given me his agreement for the publication of a scholarly journal. He had let me know, right away, that he had no taste for surrealist works, but he showed himself particularly open to research on the subject. Neither of us thought that our commitment would last nearly forty years...
