Ambroise Vollard was an art dealer, gallery owner, publisher, and French writer, born on July 3, 1866 in Saint-Denis, Réunion, and died on July 22, 1939 in Versailles.
He discovered Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. As a pioneer of modern art, he befriended the greatest painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Passionate about Alfred Jarry's Père Ubu, he was fascinated by literature.
