MARCEL NOLL

Born on December 17, 1902 in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), died on January 5, 1937 on the Madrid front; surrealist; volunteer in Republican Spain. Son of Marcellus Noll and Louise Antoinette Ruble, Marcel Noll, Mosellan volunteer in Republican Spain, left in October 1936. He was killed on January 5, 1937 on the Madrid front. Entered into contact with Breton and Éluard at a young age through Denise Lévy, née Kahn, an art lover, who lived like him in Strasbourg (Haut-Rhin) and was a cousin of Simone Breton (Denise Lévy would become the companion then wife of Pierre Naville). Noll's name appears in the table of contents of the journal La Révolution surréaliste from the first issue (1924). A journalist, he sometimes writes and signs (in 1925) the review of reviews in the columns of L'Humanité. Working as an art dealer, he held responsibilities at the Surrealist Gallery which had been opened in March 1926. He later worked at L'Humanité in Metz, German language edition. In a letter to Breton in 1932, he indicates that he gives echoes of surrealist activity there.
