Portrait de Stephen Steele

STEPHEN STEELE

Holder of an MA degree (UBC) and a doctorate (Toronto) in French Literature, Stephen Steele arrived at SFU in 1992, where he teaches literature courses at all levels, particularly related to poetry, short stories, novellas and novels, mainly for the late 19th century and the 20th century (FREN245, FREN344, FREN442, FREN440). In his research, he works at the confluence of history and literature, particularly poetry and writers' correspondences, including in archival documents, around the interwar period.

He has published Nouveaux regards sur Ivan Goll en exil avec un choix de ses lettres des Amériques (2010, Tübingen, Narr Verlag) on the poems composed by Goll in New York and Cuba during the Second World War and on contacts with American poets and exiled surrealists. He is co-author of Louis de Gonzague Frick dans tous ses états (2017, Paris, Classiques Garnier), which explores the literary activities and work of this poet friend of Apollinaire and Robert Desnos. He continues to be interested in Frick and his poetry through archives and small journals.
